  1. Visit a virtual museum as listed below and select an artwork to review.
  2. Introduce the artwork by artist, title, date, and medium.
  3. Describe the contents of the work in detailin your own words, and discuss it in terms of some of the vocabularyyou have learned in this class. Imagine you are describing it to someonewho cannot see it, and you are helping them visualize it. Set theoverall scene, then establish the details. What formal factors shape theartwork and your response to it? In your description include humanterms, such as how the artwork feels. Is there a mood or emotionassociated with the work?
When talking about work you can discussthe artist in the past tense, but always refer to the artwork itself inthe present tense, unless it was destroyed.Past Tense: The artist used a variety of warm colors to express a feeling of joy.
Present Tense: The painting gives a feeling of joy through the use of warms colors.
  4. Include a few sentences about the work’s historical significance such as how it fits into art history or within the artist’s own body of work, or to the specific show context.
  5. The paper must be written in 3rd person meaning, with no use of “I, you, or we.”

A sentence in the first person: “I went to the museum and saw a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.”
A sentence in the third person: “At the museum is a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.”
  6. Although the majorityof the paper is to be written with your own words and ideas, be sure toproperly quote and cite any reference materials utilized. Tryto write the paper from your own point of view before reading andsearching for more information. I am not too picky about how you citeyour sources, just be sure to acknowledge them within the paper. You canuse quotes or paraphrasing. Just follow with the source author’s namein parentheses and cite the full source at the end of the paper. You canalso use numbers within the paper for citations.

Most of whatyou might quote will come from the museum site or article that you findon the internet. When known acknowledge the author by listing their nameand provide a link to where you found the information. This part goesat the end of the paper with the accompanying citation number.

When you submit your paper try out the Plagiarism checker. Turn-it-incrawls the internet searching for your sources, it also has a databaseof student papers already submitted. You can check your own paper tomake sure you didn’t forget to acknowledge a source. Just click on thepercentage button in the upper right-hand corner in Canvas aftersubmitting it.
