Your task is to analyze two short stories through comparison/contrast with the following generalguidelines:

• The length of your essay must be between 750-850 words.
• You can choose any stories assigned in the unit and/or one or more of your own choosing.
• One of your stories can be from another medium (TV episode, movie, song, etc.)
• Besides the stories, you also need to incorporate information from one other scholarly source.
• You must include a works cited page that includes entries for both your stories and your outsidesource.

Choosing a topic that interests you and is compelling to the reader is probably one of the harder partsof this assignment.

• Think of a story or stories that you liked or that intrigued you.
• If you choose to compare/contrast a short story to a story from another medium, consider othermedia that has really made you think and analyze.
• Consider different critical approaches to link your texts (listed briefly below):

1. Formalist: Analyze how one or more different elements of literature (those listed in the ShortStory Elements folder) contribute to the meaning of the story.
2. Biographical: Analyze how the author’s life and experiences contribute to the meaning of thestory.
3. Historical: Analyze how the historical and cultural contexts of the work shape its meaning.
4. Gender: Analyze how a work reflects what it means to be man/woman/ gay/straight, etc…

Here are some possible topic ideas. This list is very small, so look at the next page for additionaltips.

1. The role of the Southern Gothic style (particularly the blurring of lines between victim andvillain) in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People”. Youmight also discuss the role of religion or her background in many of her works.
2. Challenging social stereotypes (particularly of Mexican-Americans) in Dagoberto Gilb’s”Shout,” “Uncle Rock,” and “Love in L.A.”
3. The theme of mother/daughter relationships in two or more of the following: Alice Walker’s”Everyday Use,” Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds,” Tillie Olsen’s “I Stand Here Ironing,” and JamaicaKinkaid’s “Girl.”
4. How the decisions about an unwanted pregnancy are made in Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills LikeWhite Elephants” and T.C. Boyle’s “The Love of My Life.”
5. Relationships between brothers in Tobias Wolff’s “The Rich Brother,” James Baldwin’s “Sonny’sBlues,” and “Louise Erdrich’s “The Red Convertible.”
6. The snares of tradition in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Ursula LeGuin’s “The Ones WhoWalk Away from Omelas.”
7. What is NOT said in Tim O’Brien’s story about the Vietnam war”The Things They Carried” andValerie Jacobs op-ed “Packing for the Inevitable.”

1. This assignment requires you to use the rhetorical mode of comparison/contrast. Please watchthis VIDEO if you need to review the structure of a comparison/contrast essay.
2. You need an MLA works cited page. Look at the folder on D2L for a refresher.
3. You must use the conventions of writing about literature for this paper. These include:

• In the introduction you must mention the titles of the texts you are analyzing and the authors’full names. In subsequent references, you should use only the authors’ last name. Do not usepersonal titles such as Mr. or Ms. or Dr.
• Keep verbs primarily in the present tense. (say, “Joe praises her” instead of “Joe praisedher.”)
• Mark titles correctly. Works that appear within others (short stories, songs, journal articles,etc.) are enclosed in quotation marks, and the longer works they are contained in (books,newspapers, journal, albums, etc.) are italicized.
• Capitalize titles correctly. Capitalize the first and last word and other words except forarticles, titles and prepositions.
