Healthy People 2020 External Initiatives
Healthy people initiatives begin in 1979 as the United States engaged in a series of 10 years plans to outline some vital national health objectives. These healthy initiatives were founded on the integration of medical care with preventative services, health promotion, and education; integration of personal and community health care and increased access to integrated care services (Shi and Singh, 2019, p. 36). Healthy people 2020 are currently initiatives that were launched in 2010 and continue to build on the work of the 2010 initiatives. Healthy People 2020 provides a set of quantifiable objectives for improving the health and well-being of Americans. The objectives of healthy 2020 are to identify health priorities in the United States; increase awareness and understanding of health determinants, disability, and diseases. Come up with measurable goals through research and evidence-based practice that can be applied at all levels.
Healthy People 2020 primary objectives include the following: people should be able to live a high quality, healthy life free of preventable diseases. They believe health care should be equal for all people, and health improvement should be for all. People should live in a social and physical environment that promotes good health for all. The promotion of quality of life, healthy devolvement, and healthy behaviors for all stages of life. Although healthy people 2020 did not reach all their targets, it is noteworthy that since the initiatives have been in place, smoking cessation has improved. Children exposed to second-hand smoking have lessened and adolescent alcohol consumption (Neumann et al., 2016).
History of Healthy People Initiatives
Healthy People 2000 contains 319 unduplicated main objectives grouped into 22 priority areas. The first 21 areas address health promotion, health protection, and preventive services. Area 22, focused on surveillance and Data Systems, addresses the development of an infrastructure to track the objectives and identify and evaluate emerging public health issues at the national, state, and local levels (CDC, 2015, para 1).
Healthy People 2010 builds on similar initiatives of the previous decade. The emphasis was on two overarching goals. They are to increase quality and years of healthy life and to eliminate health disparities for all people. These indicators were chosen based on their ability to stimulate action, the obtainability of data to measure their progress. And their significance to public health issues CDC, 2015).
Initiative Tracking
In July 2010, the White House released the National human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome Strategy; it is the nations first-ever comprehensive, coordinated HIV/AIDS roadmap with clear and measurable targets to be achieved by 2015. It was reported in 1980 that more than 575,000 Americans had lost their lives to AIDS, and, there is 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV. However, research shows by 2019, the percentage of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS decreased by 23 percent. Considering previous years yearly diagnoses were at 25 percent, which is an excellent win for the HIV/AIDS community and the nation (HIV.gov, 2020). Additionally, more people with HIV from countries with little to no resources are receiving treatment, and the number of people is steadily and dramatically increased in the past decade. Significant progress has been made in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and keeping mothers alive to see their children grow up (HIV.gov, 2020).
SWOT
Strengths– Since the start of this initiative, there has been significant progress in the treatment. As well as the spread of the virus. Even in communities where resources are scarce, individuals receive treatment that leads to a longer, healthier life.
Weakness- Human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) was first discovered in the 1960s; we are living in 2020. One would have thought that there would already be a cure for this virus. Unfortunately, that is not the case, hopefully, in the near future.
Opportunity- Education, and access to available care prove to be significant reasons for the decrease in infection rate. Communities should continue to educate the new generation about the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Threats- The United States healthcare spending has continued to expand at a high rate. With a pandemic in full swing and people losing their jobs, it is difficult to predict that they will be able to afford treatment for their chronic diseases.
Biblical implication: Jeremiah 29:11 say, For I know the plans I have for you; declare the Lord, plan to prosper you and not to harm you. Plan to keep your hope and a future. This verse is a reminder no matter what you face, no matter what comes our way, God is bigger.
