General instructions:

  • Responses must be double-spaced, use 12-point font (preferably Times New Roman), and have 1-inch margins.
  • APA in-text citations should be used (no reference page needed unless you add a resource outside of those provided in the module)
  • Word count is a MINIMUM of 750 words. Include the word count at the end of your submission.
    • Only portions of the response that are substantively related to the question will count towards the minimum word requirement. Avoid a lengthy introduction/rephrasing the question (this is not a term paper – get to the point) or the use of rhetorical questions to pad your response.
  • You MUST answer all the questions in the prompt.
  • Submit the Word document (.doc or .docx format) through Canvas. It will be scanned using TurnItIn (plagiarism detection software).
    • Do not self-plagiarize! If you have written on the same subject in the past, it is unfair to your peers for you to use the same responses you have used in the past. Self-plagiarism will result in a zero (0) on the assignment.

Although the majority of these are asking for your opinion, you will be expected to support your opinion with your readings, lecture notes, and evidence. These are designed to be critical thinking activities, not regurgitation of class material. This aspect of the course counts for a significant portion of your grade and you should treat these as serious writing assignments. Grading will be based on the student’s ability to 1) identify and explain the issue(s); 2) evaluate empirical evidence and conclusions; and 3) support one’s opinion. A rubric for the reflective writing assignments is available on Canvas.

Prompt #2 – Bias

In your paper you comment on the following:

  • Your opinion about the existence of unconscious/implicit and explicit bias in law enforcement and in society generally.
  • What implicit bias might “look like” in terms of police behaviors.
  • The consequences to police and/or community members of implicit biases in policing.
  • What the police profession should do to reduce biased behaviors on the part of its employees.
  • Specific actual policing incidents that you think may have reflected unconscious bias.
  • How do society and media affect implicit bias in law enforcement? How do they affect implicit bias against officers?

You are welcome to supplement your paper with personal anecdotes, but you must include references to the module readings.
