Current Topics in the Field of Textiles:
The purpose of the research paper is to learn about a current issue related to the field of Textiles, something that we do not cover in class. It can also cover specific cultural or historic textiles which are not discussed in detail in class.
In order to do this, find a recent article or publication that discusses one of the topics listed below. Your paper needs to include the following:
- At least 3 different sources of information, all of which need to be cited at the end of the report
- At least a 3 page report of your discussion/understanding of the topic.
- Pictures or illustrations that provide more information about your topic.
Since there are textile products in virtually every industry, and textiles are an important part of every countrys economy and culture, a topic about a new, current issue related to textiles, or of a particular type of textile unique to a specific culture, can come from a wide variety of sources. Certainly, you can begin with a google search or other internet search sources, but do not limit yourself to the internet alone. Check out the newspaper, as well as magazines. Pay particular attention to magazines that specialize in a particular topic, such as sports activities, interior design, craft work, economics, business, environmental issues, and more.
Note: the topics cannot cover anything that has been discussed in depth in class.
Some possible research topics: these are intended as starting points, only. Highlighted topics are of great interest these days, and should have a great deal of available information.
New developments in fibers, including new fibers or new advances in already existing fibers. Some examples could include Foxfibre (naturally colored cotton), fiber-optics, smart textiles spider silk, corn fibers, etc.
New developments in finishing or processing of fibers and fabrics, such as spray on fibers, molded textiles, nano-technology, environmental issues regarding dyeing and finishing, etc.
Recycling fibers, fabrics or garments: trends regarding re-use of textiles products and sustainability issues. (Please look for articles about the issue of sustainability and how this is being addressed by designers or manufacturers, not just a report on a recycled fashion contest)
Cultural textiles, such as: Navajo weaving, African mud-cloth, Indonesian batiks, ikat, kimono fabrics, Irish fisherman’s knits, etc. In particular, how are they currently being used in design, or how are they making an impact on a particular countrys economy?
Current issues in textiles: Textile legislation and labeling, textile quotas, off-shore production vs. U.S. textile industry, innovations in textile production such as quick response, textile production in the U.S. and world economy, environmental concerns in textile manufacturing, workers rights and working conditions among textile workers across the globe.
