You are expected to exhibit graduate-level critical thinking as you complete assigned readings, watch videos, and review other course material. As you probably expect, there are four components that your instructor will be looking for in each

S.T.A.R. submission.

Synthesize. Each week, you will be assigned to review a number of materials that cover closely related content. At the undergraduate level, I expect students to be able to read,

  • understand, and provide a summary of content. At the graduate level, however, I expect students to go beyond summary to integrate course content by finding common themes across the assigned material. This means, rather than discussing content from various readings separately, you must make multiple meaningful connections between various assigned readings and materials. When drawing these connections be sure to cite your

sources properly.

Theorize. You have already identified a number of themes or important takeaways that are common across the assigned readings. Now, it is your job to join together these themes in a coherent way to explain an important concept or idea. The expectation is for you to think about the connections that you identified as you synthesized this assigned

  • content and share a compelling concept that the assigned readings conveyed to you that was not explicitly stated in the assigned readings (think leadership “best practices”). In other words, I want you to demonstrate deep-level, critical thinking in order to provide an

important concept in your S.T.A.R. submission that the Instructor (or another reader) may not have gathered on their own by simply reading the assigned material.

Apply. What are the practical implications of the content about which you synthesized and theorized? Use your past, present, or potential work experience in the hospitality or a

  • related service industry to illustrate the utility of the information you have analyzed. What specific actions did you (or someone you worked with) take? Were their actions effective

or ineffective? Why?

Reflect. This is your time to provide the initial thoughts, feelings, and memories that emerged as you were reviewing the assigned content. Students are strongly encouraged to take note of these thoughts, feelings, memories, etc. as they review the material.

  • Rather than making statements like: “I liked when the author said…” and “I found topic X interesting…,” go deeper by describing and analyzing your feelings and by using memories and examples whenever appropriate. How did the assigned material influence

how you will approach current or potential leadership positions? It is okay and expected for you to express vulnerability in your responses.
