Read the article, and in the discussion forum, respond to the following questions. Remember to be persuasive use facts and logic in your response. Identify the sources of information that you use, and try to dig deeper into the issue than simply drawing general conclusions from specific incidents.

• What does the article and its source have to say about the way the public views the ethics of police officers as compared to the other professions listed?
• Do you think that the news media is responsible for creating a disproportionately negative view of police officers?
• Why do you think that people seem to more willing to publicly protest the actions of police officers but not the actions of those who they view, according to the survey that was done, as being significantly less ethical?

Part 2

There are four types of justification defenses. Select two of those types of defenses, find real life examples of each, and explain what the outcome was and why it was used.

Be sure that the examples that you use actually involve one of those types of defenses. For example, it was widely reported that in the 2012 Florida case involving George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin that the defense relied on the Stand Your Ground defense. In fact, that did not occur, the defense never used that statute as justification.

Next, go to Table 4 on the right hand side of the page and follow the link to additional crime statistics by Region, Geographic Division, and State. Find the area that you live in or an area you are interested in examining and review the statistics. Next, go to Table 6 on the right hand side of the page and follow that link to additional crime statistics by Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Find the area that you live in or are interested in and review the statistics. Feel free to navigate around the website and view any information that interests you.

Once you have reviewed the information, answer the following questions in the form of an essay:

1.Did anything about the Five Year Violent Crime Offense Figure surprise you?

2.Think about the information you hear regarding violent crime every day from all forms of the news media, social web site platforms and just in talking to your friends, family and other associates. Does what you hear on a daily basis from all of these sources give you the impression that violent crime has gone down significantly?

3.Discuss the general trends that you see on Tables 4 and 6 as to where in the country violent crime is trending up or down. Identify the areas such as “Northeast”, “South” or name the states and what the trends seem to be.

4.Explain in detail what you think causes the differences in perception and reality in regards to violent crime. Use information from your text, the lectures and your personal experiences.

5.Describe in detail why is it important to have and use complete and accurate crime data. What can it be used for? What mistakes could be avoided if the crime information is accurate and complete? What would the advantage be to an individual or group to misstate crime volume and trends?

Part 4

There are eight different topics that have been subject to some type of criminal law reform. Some of them are established reforms; others are still changing with the times.

Select one of the eight topics, and answer the following questions in the form of an essay:

1.What caused the perceived need for the law or change in the law?

2.If laws were passed was the goal they intended to achieve reached? If yes explain how, if not explain why not.

3.Were there any unintended consequences of the law?

4.Is there a need to further amend the law? If so was something over looked in the original law or did circumstances change?

5.Based on what you have learned about the topic you chose is there any change you would recommend to that law now? If so what would it be and what would it accomplish.

Discussion Prompt #1

The communication principles impact our communication. It is important to recognize and understand the eight basic principles for effective interpersonal communication. Select on the principles and describe a situation where this principle impacted you in a significant manner.

Describe an I–It, I–You, and I–Thou relationship in your life (one each). Analyze differences in communication and personal knowledge in the three relationships.

Part 6

Discussion Prompt #1

Online communication allows people the ability to create new identities. People can switch genders, race, age, etc. since the visual and auditory cues used in face-to-face encounters are not used. Do you think this practice is helpful, harmful, or both to people’s self-concept? Does it create ethical issues when presenting oneself as something they are not? Why or why not? What might be some reasons people do this? How could this be both useful and not useful?

Discussion Prompt #2

Find a popular magazine and identify examples of the generalized other’s perspective. How does the media define desirable women and men? How is that different than what “regular” people define as desirable? Analyze the messages and how society responds to them. What impact does this have on our relationships?

Part 7

For your essay first share in your own words what Interpersonal Communication is and why it’s important to study.

Then share an interpersonal situation that involved an ethical issue. This can be from personal experience, current events, or seen on television. Give a detailed definition of what the ethical issue is (what makes it ethical) and what communication practices or principles were used to address the issues. Looking at the situation what communication principles could be used to create effective communication?

Provide a detailed analysis of the situation incorporating reading and textbook material. For instance, how does the situation relate to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, was dual perspective used, etc.

Your paper should be 350 words (roughly 1.5 pages double spaced) double spaced and font Times New Roman size 12.

Part 8

For your essay interview/talk with someone you have a close relationship with (such as spouse, friend, sibling, student advisor, etc.) about how you communicate or are labeled. Use the Johari Window Diagram to diagram how you communicate with them. What would you both put in the four quadrants? What insights can you draw from this diagram and how does that person see you? Was this your reflected appraisal of yourself? How did things move from the Hidden quadrant to the Open quadrant, or from your Blind to Open quadrant, with that person?

Do you agree with enriching the self toward maintaining a healthy identity? Share why you agree or don’t agree. Apply what you’ve learned this week and write one goal you’ve created to improve your self-concept. Provide a detailed analysis of yourself incorporating the reading and textbook material.
