Choice 2: Adapting a Scientific Text

You may choose a text you are interested in. Make sure the paragraph you are using comes from a scientific test published since 2018. Points will be deducted for texts older than that.

Adapt your chosen paragraph using the material you learned about writing for the public.

Provide enough background so a general audience will understand the paragraph (you may have to add some information if sufficient background is not included in the original paragraph).

Give the general reader, through your writing, enough reason to be interested in this.

You may use more than one paragraph and strong topic headings, if it calls for that.

  • In your writing, you would want to think about why is this important politically, economically, and ethically.
  • Remember that less than 40 percent of adults in this country have graduated college or any higher education. That means 60 percent are likely not familiar with any technical jargon or even basic concepts. When writing this, imagine your audience is someone interested in the topic, but without higher education in the sciences. That does not mean to “dumb it down”– it means that you should write for your audience.
