a. What does Young Goodman Brown find out (or think he finds out) about his father and grandfather?

b. What effect does this experience have upon the rest of Young Goodman Brown’s life?

Young Goodman Brown described his father and grandfather as Christian people who would never go out into the wilderness.  When he was told that his father and grandfather was friends of the traveler, he was a bit confused. He was told that they shared walks along the same path. Young Goodman Brown probably feels as though his grandfather and father wasn’t really Christian people. And wondered if they worshipped the devil.

The effect of the experience that Goodman Brown derailed his life in many ways. He always thought highly of his father, grandfather, his wife, and the Christian values they shared. He also held high regards for the pastor and deacon of his church. On the journey his set out on that night, his wife asked him not to go. Although he continued this journey, he was meet by a man that seemed devilish. This is foreshadowed in his initial fear and paranoia: “What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!” This man spoke of Goodman Brown’s father and grandfather being a friend of his and knowing a lot of other people that he knows.  He also heard of the voices of both the deacon and pastor.  When he came out from hiding, he was able to see that they were not who the proclaimed to be. He also found out that his wife was also involved.  When Young Goodman Brown left that place, he was never sure if it was a reality or a dream.
