For this assignment, you are being asked to identify a terrorist attack and to find news articles that present a variety of perspectives on the attack. For example, in 2009 there was a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, where 13 people were killed. Some people identified it as an act of terrorism, while others identified it as workplace violence. The differences in the reporting do not need to be that severe, but the purpose of the assignment is for you to begin to think about how reporters, editors, and owners of media outlets frame the news to fit not only their perspectives but also to the perspectives of their readers. By searching for coverage across multiple news outlets, especially if they serve different audiences and purposes (e.g. The New York Times versus The New York Post), students should be able to pick out similarities and differences in the tone, purpose, and intent of the articles. A good source for identifying news articles across an array of sources is Proquest (Links to an external site.).

For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint slide (or a similar type of presentation), share your computer screen while recording a video on Zoom (or other software you might be comfortable using), and give a 4-5 minute presentation on your topic (please note that you will lose points if you are outside of the 4-5 minute range). Start your presentation by discussing the terrorist incident you chose to search for news articles on. Talk about the terrorist organization/ideology involved, where it occurred, and who the targets were. What was the domestic and international reaction to this act? Next, discuss the 4 news sources you chose to compare coverage. These news sources should be different from each other in some form, whether geographically, ideologically, or in another way. Present some background information on these sources. Finally, discuss the similarities and differences that you noticed in the coverage. Hypothesize as to why you believe the sources had varying coverage, or not. There is no requirement for the number of articles you need to read, but you should read enough to get an idea as to if the coverage varies, and if it does, in what ways.
