To start off with, I think it is important to remember that there is no one solution when it comes to how to address crime. Youth street gangs are no different in the sense that there is no singular effective way to address this issue; saying so would assume that we understand all the reasons that lead to the need for gang affiliations in some youth and not in others. All the way back in Genesis 2:18 we read that God gave Eve to Adam because “It is not good that man should be alone” (English Standard Version [ESV]). Looking at this verse, though it originally referred to marriage, it is obvious that mankind was made for community. I think this is one of the unconscious reasons that youth get involved in gangs: to have a sense of belonging and community. It goes back to the social disorganization theory when it points to the brokenness of communities and homes (Bartollas, Schmalleger, & Turner, 2019). When there is a breakdown in the home, kids are more likely to turn to other places to find the security and emotional support in a gang.
If the need for affiliation and community is a true hypothesis, then providing more support and a place for youth to hang out after school and in the summer might be the key to keeping youth gang rates down, “Research has shown that if teenagers at risk are going to find trouble, it will be in the hours after school, when they’re idle and alone” (Ferrendelli, 2003). If churches and families open their homes and created events for these youth, the number of kids getting involved would decrease.
