The incident that I will be discussing is the Chernobyl accident which occurred on April 26 of the year 1986. This was the most serious nuclear accident that has taken place in Ukraine. The nuclear power plant at Chernobyl went out of control during a low-power test which led to an explosion and a fire that destroyed the reactor building and released an immense amount of radiation into the atmosphere (Frequently asked Chernobyl questions 2016).At what point does a technological or man-made event become labeled a disaster?An event usually is a disaster when medical help will not make a difference due to the severity of the destruction. During this event, over 100 radioactive elements which included plutonium, iodine, strontium, and cesium were spread out in a wide area. Due to this, about 1800 causes of thyroid cancer in children between the ages of 0-14 were discovered when the incident occurred (Frequently asked Chernobyl questions 2016). At the time of the explosion, two of the employees from the location passed away. Within a few weeks, 28 more individuals also passed away due to acute radiation syndrome (Chernobyl Accident 1986).How well do you think the United States is prepared for a disaster like the one you selected?I do not believe that the United States is fully prepared for a nuclear disaster like the one that occurred in Ukraine because most of the population is not trained on how to handle this situation. Not many individuals think of something like this occurring in the United States, so they do not grow the curiosity to research and become prepared. Individuals must know how to protect themselves just in case something like this were to occur here. We must get as far as we can from the flash of light and avoid looking at it, we must move to shelter underground or above the 9th floor within 20 minutes, we must move crosswind away from damaged buildings, we must keep skin, mouth, and nose covered, we must also remove our clothing, rinse off with a hose as well as seeking medical care as soon as possible, most importantly we must remain in shelter for 12-24 hours, or till advised it is safe to exit (Nuclear disaster: How prepared are we? 2022).

The incident I chose is named Fukushima Daiichi. This accident occurred in 2011 nuclear power plant in Japan. It is listed at the second worst nuclear accident in the history behind the Chernobyl disaster. An earthquake and tsunami led to power loss in the plant. Without the power, the cooling system had failed, and cores overheated. Leading to partial meltdown of the fuel rods, fire in the storage reactor, explosions in the outer containment building and releasing the radiation. (Britannica, 2022) The point that a technological or man-made event becomes labeled as a disaster is when the effect of the incident forces an overwhelm ability to meet demand for healthcare. The world health organization states that it is defined as a sudden ecologic phenomenon of sufficient magnitude to require external assistance. (Zivulewsky, 2001) The United States is prepared for disaster such as nuclear incident. By the Nuclear Regulatory commission emergency preparedness recommends providing potassium iodine to people who live 10-mile zone of the nuclear plant. They recommend this as a supplement to help planning for sheltering and evacuating people in the event of nuclear power plant emergency. (Kahn, 2011)
