Shondra – Case Study

Shondra tells you that whenever she has a reading assignment in her Introduction to Biology course, she goes into her bedroom to be alone, closes the door to keep any noise out, and then lies down on her bed and starts reading the chapter. Inevitably, within a few minutes she loses concentration or falls asleep. She tells you the material is so boring that even when she does get through an entire chapter; she has no idea what she has read. Shondra wants to be a physical therapist someday, so it is essential that she pass her Biology course, but with a total of twenty-five chapters to get through this term, she fears she will fail.

Discussion Questions

  1. What is Shondra doing right when she prepares to read? What is she doing wrong?
  2. What changes could Shondra make to help her stay awake and focused on her textbook as she reads?
  3. Does Shondra appear to be following the steps of active reading, and how can you tell?
  4. What changes could Shondra make to help improve her understanding of the material she is reading?
  5. Do you have any other recommendations that might improve Shondra’s reading comprehension?

1. She goes into her bedroom to be alone and closes the door to keep any noise out. What she is doing wrong is laying down on her bed.2. She can actually sit at her desk (if she has one) or she can just sit up. She could also spread out her time when reading chapters and take breaks so that she doesn’t get bored or stressed.3. I do not believe she is following the steps of active reading. The fact that she does has no idea what she has read tells me that she does not take notes or highlights important information within the chapter. She could also scan through the chapters and briefly right down small notes that she can understand. Tag certain pages with sticky notes so that she can go back and review. With out key points you will be lost.4. She can continue to re-read the chapters as many times as she can until she grasps an understanding of the material. There could be material she over looked and re-reading could help her identify it. Getting enough sleep can help her stay awake and concentrate without a feeling of sleepiness.5. My  recommendation is if she still does not seem to understand the material she can reach out to her peers/classmates for help or her professor. Networking is a great way to help yourself.

Shondra is doing the right thing as she moves to a quiet place to work however, she is making a mistake as she gets on the bed to sit to comfortable to fall asleep.Shondra can stay awake if she drinks or eats something to keep her alive.Shondra is not following the steps of active reading because she says “the material is so boring that even when she does get through an entire chapter; she has no idea what she has read.” when you are active reading you have to be engaged in the work that you are reading, it may help more if as she reads, she takes notes to help her be more successful in remembering what she has read. She can improve her understanding of the material by studying the material by her self not by textbook. You will build up your reading by just practicing in reading the material.
