Rationale:
This semester you will write a research essay on a popular culture topic, using cultural criticism / literary theory as the lens for your reading. I have chosen to have you write about the following articles from The Journal of Popular Culture to:
1) Give you an idea of some of the endless topics out there on popular culture. This will help you as you think about your own research topic.
2) Provide examples of academic writing on popular culture. I want you to pay careful attention to how these writers organize/structure their essays, and to the tone they use. Notice for example, that none of the writers make use of the second person pronoun “you” in their writing! You want to try to model your essays on what these writers are doing.
3) Give you practice identifying and summarizing arguments. Reading these articles and writing about them will help you learn how to read and write about articles for your own research essays.
Read ONE of these articles and write a 1 1/2 page critical review of the article.
If you are really ambitious, and none of these articles pique your interest, feel free to go online to the Journal of Popular Culture (it is available through our library database), and find an article that does interest you to write your review about.
To earn full credit you need:
1) Provide the information about the article you have chosen to read / write about in MLA format at the top of your page.
ENG 112
In the top, right-hand corner you need to include your last name followed by a page number, like this – Potter 1.
3) You need to introduce the author or authors of the article and the title of the article in your first sentence.
4) You need to explicitly identify the thesis of the article.
5) You need to tell me what strengths or weaknesses you see in the article.
6) You need to write in standard English, following the rules of grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
7) Should NOT tell me whether or not you liked the article. Your personal feelings about the article are irrelevant to a critical review.
