Rationale:
This is a pre-writing activity aimed at helping you explore possible topics for your final research essay.
Instructions:
create a list of 10 possible pop culture topics. These topics need to be listed in sentence form, and need to be quite narrow. For example, students who simply say that they want to write about music or social media will not receive points. Students who, instead, say that they want to use Queer theory to write about how Taylor Swift’s emergence as an ally for the LGBTQ community via her song, “You Need to Calm Down,” is problematic because she seems to be using this as a marketing strategy, will receive full points.
Fifty points are available for this assignment. To earn all fifty points, you need to write all 10 topics. Each topic is worth up to 5 points, with 5 signifying an excellent topic, 4 signifying a good topic, 3 signifying an average topic, and 2 and 1 signifying topics that are unsatisfactory.
Keep in mind that although each of you must create your own original list of topics, you may use a topic created by another student for your essay, and I am fine with more than one student writing about the same topic as long as the students writing about the same topic do their work independently of each other.
