Recommendation reports are common genres in business and community settings. Generally speaking, they revolve around one or more specific recommendations for addressing a specific need, issue, problem, or question using the resources available to the writer and his/her organization, institution, or business. Typically, a good recommendation will not aim to solve a problem on a national or global scale; rather, it will aim for something more targeted and local.

This exercise invites you to analyze the genre conventions and rhetorical situation of one of the attached recommendation reports. Among the many examples, you should choose one that suits you as you respond to the following questions.  In this exercise, discuss: How have the authors of this recommendation report worked with the conventions of the recommendation report genre? Who is the audience(s) for the report, and how have the authors shaped the piece to address the audience(s)? How do the authors represent the problems they identify in the report? How do the authors use various kinds of evidence to build support for their recommendation?

Then, consider: aside from obvious differences in subject matter, how does this recommendation report differ from the kind of recommendation report you’re being asked to complete for assignment 1? How might you adapt this recommendation report to better fit the assignment guidelines?
