The bill that I would like to follow is H.R. 5575: VA Nurse and Physician Assistant RAISE Act, sponsored by Mrs. Lauren Underwood. The purpose of this bill is to increase the base pay rate for nurses and other people in the medical field who are working in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Although it is strictly for that department, I would like to follow it regardless. So far, there is five Cosponsors on that bill, a total of four Democrats and one Republican (GovTrack.us., 2022).
We can all agree that there is a state nurse shortage, and most facility are not paying the nurses well which cause them to live the field (Jarosinski, 2022). There has been an increase in Doctors and Physicians in fields like plastic surgery instead of the fields that really needs them because of the pay (Heyes, 2005).
A lot of nurses and Doctors are graduating with a high amount of student debt loans and will be at risk of loosing their license if they default on their loans payment. In other cases, the patient to nurse ratio is too much workload on a nurse and for the amount of money they are getting paid, most of them refuse to work in these department and it is easy to make a mistake that can cost them jail time and their license revoked, therefore, they are putting their heads in other directions. If this bill is passed, the pay had been increasing, other department will be forced to do the same which will have a better result on nurses working at the bedside, and more geriatric nurses and pediatric nurses and physicians. It will be a non-toxic environment with better pay and better staffing, which will lead to more people coming out better than they got in, and more one-on-one caring for each patient (Heyes, 2005).
