Are leaders born, or are they made? Why?

While leadership is wide and complex, there have been different yet very genuine discussions on whether leaders are made or born, and yes, both statements are true. These arguments have their truths, and many people choose the part they support depending on their standpoint (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). There are some innate leadership qualities that specific people seem to possess, and the problem is that some people think that leaders are born. At the same time, some people rise to leadership depending on the environment. Thus, the reason why other people think that leaders are made.

This post posits that leaders are made because, even with these innate abilities, if one lacks the right environment, then their leadership will never flourish to admirable levels. There is no universal measure for a good leader, but one’s leadership abilities will depend on the situation and the current magnitude of the issue to be handled (de Vries & Engellau, 2018). Everyone can be a leader as long as they are exposed to the right environment where their abilities can be shaped and tried, then adjusted to fit the right situation.

Those with a natural innate ability to lead will indeed rise to be better leaders; more easily, everyone can rise and attain leadership abilities as long as they learn. Also, purporting that leaders are only born would mean that introverts and other people who are not charismatic should not be leaders (de Vries & Engellau, 2018). This is incorrect, as we have to see many of them successfully rise to significant leadership positions. The other reason why leaders are made is that leadership is a process that will therefore require continuous learning and development. This means that if it is assumed leaders are born, they do not need any training or mentorship to better their innate abilities.
