Soccer has long been an expression of social and cultural identity within different countries. It is often said that many soccer teams around the world are a direct reflection of the countries they represent. Germany and Brazil are often cited as typical examples. For instance, Germany celebrates core values of being efficient, technical, disciplined, hard-working, etc., and the German national team represents a style of play that celebrates and reinforces these values. When one looks at Brazilian soccer, it is seen as a flashy display of showmanship, creativity, and dance; all qualities some see as representing Brazilian culture more generally. This is not always a good thing, however, when identities are built upon a foundation of past struggles suffered by groups who were traditionally and systematically disenfranchised, as is the case with Tottenham and Ajax with a strong Jewish tradition. The result has been a legacy of racism in European leagues, which both FIFA and UEFA claim to be fighting aggressively. Please discuss the importance of social and cultural identities being manifested through sport. What are some of the positives and negatives that can arise from such expressions? How do sports such as soccer influence culture? What are some potential solutions to some of the negative impacts we have seen?
