The Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA, was designed to help people before, during, after disasters (FEMA, 2022). On September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers in New York City were attacked. FEMA did a lot to help people and the community recover from this disaster. They deployed about twenty-one search and rescue teams to New York, as well as other teams to Northern Virginia. On the financial side of things, FEMA funded more than $295 million to NYPD to cover over time costs and about $28 million to FDNY to cover the cost of their destroyed vehicles. They also aided in debris removal, restoring infrastructure, transportation, and mortgage and rental costs (FEMA, 2021).
In addition to FEMA, there were about 91,000 rescue, recovery, and clean up workers. A lot of the workers were volunteers from the FDNY (NYC 9/11 Health, 2022). Following this disaster, President George Bush signed the Homeland Security Act in 2003 (Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, 2022). This consisted of twenty-two agencies and bureaus in the Department of Homeland Security set out to prevent and respond to natural and man-made disasters.
