I do believe I have read some qualitative studies in the past before reading this week’s article. Although I do not remember the premise of the studies, I do recall it being about quality of life. I find that with mental health studies, they are more qualitative than quantitative since the question regards a certain mental illness and how it impacts the individuals life. For this week’s article, it explores the quality of daily life for cancer patients during the treatment period. I find this to be extremely interesting because like it is said in the article, no qualitative study has every explored and researched how these cancer patient’s feel towards their quality of life during the most difficult time in their lives. Sibeoni et al. (2018), felt that this study was necessary because as doctors and nurses, our main objective for cancer patients is their quality of life (para. 1). As the researchers put it into words, “This qualitative study provides access to patients experience of their care and daily lives, allowing us to see cancer care through the patients eyes” (Sibeoni et al., 2018). This study focused on the mental wellbeing of these patients and how cancer has changed their lives. The way the researchers conducted the study was very personable, especially their individual interviews. I feel that other quantitative studies view the patients strictly as numbers and data, however this study was different in the way that they focused on the patients’ overall illness experiences, support objects, and personal relationships. I enjoyed reading about this article because I hope to see more studies conducted in a similar manner.
