Question #1
In Adam Grants Ted Talk, What frogs in hot water can teach us about thinking again, he started us with a fact. He stated if you were to put a frog in boiling water it would jump right out, but if you put the frog in cool water and heated it gradually it would die. He goes on to list examples used by humans that keep us from jumping. He explains that we fail to rethink and see the warning signs. That being intelligent and good at thinking makes you awful at rethinking. I wonder how accurate that is for the majority of people. If we were to survey students would most be able to jump out of that boiling pot, or no? Would their answers vary depending on the situation? In his discussion he talked about a trip to Panama he took with his friends. So, were in Panama, we get off to a late start, but its only supposed to take about two hours to get to the top. After four hours, we still havent reached the top. Its strange that it’s taking so long, but we dont stop to rethink whether we should turn around. Now to most of us you would think why would he not just check the map? Id want to know if we were put in the same situations who would check the map and who would have kept going? Is there a similarity between the people who each did the same thing?
Question #2
I find it fascinating that some people think their minds can only hold so much. Having a Growth Mindset is so important to move forward in life and to enrich yourself with knowledge. A Fixed Mindset I believe is an obstacle, I personally think people will always find a way to learn more and create their own understanding of any topics or situations around the world. I do understand that people will stick to what they know for their grades, or any other techniques they have in place. I guess my confusion lies with, how can some people go out into the world today and stick only to their limited knowledge from limited experiences? What I mean by that is, those people could only know how to act from the school settings theyve been in, or a strict household background. So going out in the town with only basic knowledge from said experiences, wont necessarily help with street smarts or buying big items like a car or a house. I believe that a Growth Mindset is important to advance in our lives but what benefits do you see from having a Fixed Mindset? How can your abilities of maturity improve with a Fixed Mindset?
