Discuss the following and what the Federal Government should do in response to each of these issues. Be specific in your discussion and remember the Federal government is only one of several factors in influencing change. 1. Limiting significantly or forbidding with stiff penalties texting , calling or ANY use of a cell phone at all while driving except in the case of emergencies. I repeat ANY use of not just texting.
2. Texas like some other states is allowing handguns on college campuses- should the Federal government limit such legislation through more stringent gun control? Is access to firearms in sch a venue acceptable?
3. Oregon now allows a “form” of “assisted” suicide where the assistance is in the form of providing the means and information not actually helping suicide. This usually is in the case of painful terminal illness or incapacitating illness. Should the Federal government legalize assisted suicide?
4. As concerns over both personal safety and national security continue to increase, airports and other pubic venues have institutionalized searches and inspections. There are also many intrusions into the private sphere including “listening” to cell phones and email searches.There are claims of racial profiling and unreasonable invasion of personal privacy. Should the Federal government have more stringent guidelines in this activity- what should govern such tightened security?
5. One current issue is the legalization of marijuana. States are beginning to legalize regulated sale and use of marijuana. Should this take place in Texas? Why or why not?
6. There is current protest over the demonstrations of far right and quasi Nazi organizations and the uproar that follows. In addition, Confederate symbols including statues have been discussed as racist symbols and many removed,. Given our Constitutional and historical emphasis on free speech and assembly, what are the limits and response to these current trends?
7. There is great discussion of what would improve student learning at the college and high school levels. What single aspect of teaching-learning would you change to enhance learning and knowledge levels.
