Choose two of the works we covered in Topic 7 and explore how the theme/characteristic you chose is demonstrated in those works.
Here are some of the Modernist works we covered that you may write on: Any of Imagist poems we studied, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Sailing to Byzantium, The Second Coming, Musee des Beaux Arts, In Memory of W.B. Yeats, Hill Like White Elephants, Bablylon Revisited, The Horse Dealers Daughter, Kew Gardens.
Your proposal will include the following:
A paragraph that begins by introducing how or why the theme/characteristic youve chosen helps define the Modern Period and ends with your working thesis, a claim that states what your essay will attempt to prove (ie: In The Second Coming, the Modernist crisis of faith is demonstrated by );
A paragraph that introduces the two works you will be using (names, when they were published, authors) and a brief explanation of why these works are emblematic of the theme/characteristic you have chosen; and
Two to three secondary sources you will be using to support the claims you will make in your essay, in proper MLA form. Also write a two-to-three sentence description of why each source will be useful in your essay.
