Starting Out Right (SOR) provides of wealth of social and health resources and education aimed specifically at pregnant and parenting youth with the ultimate goal of improving maternal-child outcomes through health education, social services, empowerment, and active participation in healthcare. This population is frequently stigmatized and discriminated against not only by society and the public, but also by the health and education professionals who are meant to be helping these individuals (SmithBattle, 2013). Pregnant and parenting youth frequently report instances of differential treatment, verbal rebuking, and feeling disregarded, even by medical professionals (e.g., pediatricians, OB-GYNs, nurses) and school educators (e.g., teachers, principles, counselors), leading many of these individuals to drop out of school and skip appointments to avoid the stigmatization; this behavior only serves to further the negative stereotype and stigmatization of young mothers as incompetent, unmotivated, and irresponsible (SmithBattle, 2013). Most public health services and messaging surrounding youth and pregnancy focuses solely on teen pregnancy prevention, such as the Power to Decide campaign (https://powertodecide.org), with little to no support for pregnant and parenting youth. SOR helps to fill this gap in many Arizona communities for those who decide to parent, but could implement collaborative methods to partner with educators, health providers, and even policy makers in an effort to reduce bias and discrimination against these youth by the professionals that play a key role in their education and healthcare.
