Systems theory is an approach to studying the world that emphasizes the linked nature of all aspects of existence. Everything is considered a component of several larger systems, and each of these more extensive systems is composed of several smaller subsystems (Saunders et al., 2019). This method of thinking has significant ramifications for public health nursing because it has the potential to assist us in gaining a deeper understanding of the complex challenges that patients face.

The nursing process is a more linear method of problem-solving in which nurses first identify a problem, then construct a plan to solve the problem, then put the plan into action, and finally evaluate the strategy’s effectiveness (Saunders et al., 2019). On the other hand, the theory of systems emphasizes the necessity of comprehending the more extensive system within which a particular issue is placed (Saunders et al., 2019). This can assist nurses in determining the underlying issues that are causing problems and in developing more efficient remedies.

Systems theory can be constructive in tackling public health issues such as obesity, which is frequently caused by complex causes (Saunders et al., 2019). This is one of the areas in which it has the potential to make the most significant contribution (Saunders et al., 2019). Nurses can devise more targeted and successful interventions when they are better aware of the interconnection of all the factors that lead to obesity. In the context where I am completing my practicum, I have witnessed the application of systems theory to great benefit in creating a community health program to target an increase in mental health services to the homeless and the importance of wrap-around services for Severe Mental Illness. . This program took a holistic approach to the issue, considering the individual’s holistic history, providing care through a trauma-informed lens, and creating a network where the most vulnerable find refuge.
