A formal leader is a person who exercises authority placed on them by an organization pursuant based on the person’s position in the said organization; an example of a formal leader is having the ability of a company president to exert control over employees which is based upon his status as president of the company or organization. Whereas informal leader is an individual within an organization who is worthy of listening to because of their perceived experience and reputation amongst their peers, this style of leadership influences the decisions of others although they hold no formal position of authority and have no power over those who choose to follow their lead. An example of an informal leader is a colleague who is well known for their intelligence, wisdom, and interpersonal qualities, and this person isn’t necessarily a high-ranking member of the organization, but others do respect them and typically go to them for advice and knowledge about procedures.
