Neuman’s Systems Model regards a person as a multidimensional being, or a “client system” which is influenced by five subsystems, physiochemical (e.g., structure and function of the body); psychological (e.g., emotions); socio-cultural (e.g., relationships, and social-cultural expectations); spiritual (e.g., spiritual beliefs; and developmental (e.g., development over the lifespan). Health and wellness are defined as the condition in which all subparts of environmental variables are in harmony with the whole of the client.

Based on the systems model, a public health nurse would consider actual or potential environmental stressors (e.g., intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extra-personal stressors) that threatens the stability of the client system and implement primary, secondary, and tertiary nursing intervention for attaining, retaining, and maintaining the wellness of a patient’s system (Nursing Theory, 2020). To achieve harmony in the client system, Neuman incorporates the nursing process in caring for the client through assessment (e.g., look for actual or potential stressors); making a nursing diagnosis (e.g., formulate a diagnosis after collecting and interpreting data); plan, or establish health goals to stabilize the patient system; implement the plan using primary, secondary, and tertiary preventions; and finally evaluate the outcomes to determine whether or not balance to the patient system has been restored (Nursing Theory, 2020).
