The critical thinking exercise for this week is to address one of the following writing prompts about the importance long term memory. Choose either topic. It is not necessary to do both.
Option 1: You may know someone who has severe memory impairment, perhaps from a dementia condition like Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of your essay should describe what we know about this disease, including both biology and psychological changes. The second part should covered what it is like to live with this experience. What is hard to do? How has it impacted their ability to live independently and function in a normal way? If you don’t know someone with this disease, it is okay to invent a fictional person and describe what this imaginary person might be like.
Option 2: The proportion of elderly people is gradually increasing in our society. This is sometimes called the “silver tsunami”, in which silver refers to older adults and tsunami referring to a tidal wave. An increasing number of older adults will include more people with dementia (severe memory and judgment impairment). Your essay should explore the impact of amnesia in this coming wave of elderly adults. How big is this problem? What should our society due to manage this challenge?
