Prior to kindergarten, parents have to decide what might be the best placement for their children, and the three choices tend to be a) at home with a parent; b) in a child care setting (such as a neighbor or licensed home provider); or c) in an early education program (such as a preschool).

Provide a brief description of each.

Identify two benefits and drawbacks of each setting. Avoid exaggerated reasoning such as, “Home is better because the care center might have a fire one day”, or “The home provider might have an affair and so they wouldn’t be watching the children.” Keep it reasonable, please.

  • Consider a close friend or family member (don’t use their real name). Provide a little detail about their life and then give them a recommendation of placement based on their situation, and your reasoning.
  • For example, my friend Caren is married, and her husband has a well-paying occupation. They are financially stable. They live in a very densely packed city area. They both have college degrees (hers is education-related) and they own their home. Their son (age 2) will be eligible for placement in the fall. Given the situation, I would encourage a mixture of home (2x/week) and an early education program (3x/week) for the next academic year. There is no financial need for both parents to work outside of the home. The transition/balance may be easier on the child.  The little boy will get some of the social stimulation and acclimation while still maintaining some amount of connection to the parent. In addition, the parents are capable to structure learning activities into the home (like art, music, numbers, letters) and Caren is knowledgeable enough to identify issues that need attention and create an environment to work on any issue.
