The following questions utilize the case study below. This case study combines text from the following two sources:Kaplan S. Hoffman J. Juul suspends selling most e-cigarette flavors in stores. New York times. 2018. Thomas K. Kaplan S. E-Cigarettes Went Unchecked in 10 Years of F.D.A. Inaction. New York Times, 2019. Portions of these references were used in whole for educational purposes only.
E-cigarettes were originally developed to help smokers quit by giving them a way to satisfy their nicotine cravings without the tar and deadly carcinogens that come with burning tobacco. But as manufacturers started adding flavors such as mango, fruit, crème, and cucumber, which account for 45% of all sales, teen use started to increase. Since it came on the market in 2015, Juul has become all but irresistible to teenagers. During 20192020, e-cigarette use increased approximately 1,000% (from 2.4% to 26.5%) among high school current e-cigarette users and approximately 400% (from 3.0% to 15.2%) among middle school current e-cigarette users. Multiple factors have contributed to this increase, including youth-appealing flavors and product innovations. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, can harm the developing adolescent brain, and can increase risk for future addiction to other drugs. To address this growing issue, public health experts have recommended policies to ban flavored e-cigarette products, regulate the use of social media for promoting e-cigarette products, and additional taxes levied upon products appealing to youth.
