Ms. S is seeking treatment because she is concerned about her ability to complete a physician’s assistant program at a local university.  She began the program approximately one year ago, but has spent the last few months struggling to pass her classes and attend mandatory program events.  She often feels distracted, worries often about her ability to complete her program, and rarely sleeps through the night.  Six months ago, when Ms. S was leaving school later than usual, an individual attempted to steal her purse in the parking lot.  Although she was not physically injured in the attack, she related feeling unsafe and on some days, reported not even attending school for fear of a similar incident occurring.  Prior to a few months ago, Ms. S was an exemplary student.  She excelled in her classwork, and was actively involved in several university clubs and community activities.     

What steps would you take to conduct an assessment with Ms. S?  What would you need to know in order to best assist Ms. S?  Next, pretend that Ms. S meets criteria for PTSD and had a previous diagnosis of hypertension.  What might her DSM-5 diagnosis look like?
