What type of cell is it? It is a muscle cell
What type of organism is the cell found in? Muscle cells also known as myocytes, are the cells that makeup muscle tissue. There are 3 types of muscle cells in the human body; cardiac, skeletal, and smooth.
Where in the organism is the cell found? Smooth muscle fibers are found in the walls of hollow visceral organs like the liver, pancreas, and intestines. They look spindle-shaped and are under involuntary control. Skeletal muscle fibers happen in muscles that are attached to the skeleton.
What is its function or duty? To help with body movement, maintenance of posture and body temperature, communication, construction of organs and vessels, and contraction of the heart.
How does it contribute to the ability of the organism to maintain homeostasis? The muscle system performs three functions that help maintain homeostasis: movement, support, and heat production. The movement produced by muscles allows us to make adjustments to any change in conditions.
Describe the cells characteristics. Muscle tissue has four distinctive characteristics: excitability, contractility, extensibility, and elasticity.
Are there organelles? Each muscle fiber contains between 1000 and 2000 long, cylindrical organelles called myofibrils arranged in parallel to each other. Myofibrils are made of protein fibers and are specialized for contraction.
Does the cell contain components that are unique to that type of cell? The cell membrane of a muscle cell is known as the sarcolemma and the cytoplasm is called sarcoplasm. The sarcoplasm contains an oxygen storage site.
Can the cell reproduce, if so, how does this occur? Is this type of cell found in other organisms? Muscle cells are like nerve cells, once they are made during the initial stages of development, they never reproduce again. We have a fixed number of muscle cells in our body if one dies then it is not replaced. Muscle cells are only found in animals and humans.
