Marshall McLuhan (Links to an external site.) is one of the most famous media scholars. He might be one of the few that many people have heard of. He came to prominence in the 1960s with the rise of television and broadcast culture and would often appear on TV to explain what he thought was the importance and transformational effects of media. This essay is easily his most famous, but as his most famous is also the most often misunderstood. As a side, but related note, for some reason a good deal of early “media studies” scholarship grows out of Catholic Universities, and in some cases specifically Jesuit education. Carey, Ong, and McLuhan. It is dense, so take your time, read it carefully
To DO, Rather than do keywords and definitions your task for McLuhan is slightly different. You are going to pick two quotes from the reading.
Quote One: Find a quote that you think captures the essence of McLuhan’s argument. No one passage will really accomplish this otherwise he would just write one passage, but find one that you think distills the central argument. Copy the passage into your notes. Then in around 100 words or so explain what you take McLuhan to be saying.
Quote Two: Find a passage that you found particularly interesting or particularly confounding. Copy this passage into your notes. Then in your notes, in around 100 words of so explain what made you select this passage. What do you find interesting or confounding?
