Discussion Question:
Look through the Human Rights Campaigns map of state policies. We can see that gay marriage is legal in all states. Check out some of the other policies and compare different states. Why do you think that advocacy for LGBT rights are still important after the right to marriage has been won?
Lauren’s Post:
Even though same-sex marriage has been legalized over all 50 states, it is still very important to advocate for LGBTQ rights. There are other ways that people of the LGBTQ community are discriminated against and dont have the same rights as everyone else. For example, most states do not include transgender healthcare and most trans people are left without the proper health care. Also, in 31 states there are no explicit employment protections for transgender people (ACLU, 2020). Very few states have anything in place to protect the youth of the LGBTQ community when it comes to being bullied in school or discriminated against. Some states do not recognize non-discriminatory housing, employment, anti-conversion therapy, and education. Even now there is the topic of marriage equality for all 50 states being pushed to be overturned by at least 2 of the Supreme Court Justices. The LGBTQ community will continue to need people everywhere advocating for their rights until we are safe and receiving the same rights anyone else does.

Although the LGBTQ community won the right to get married, they are still having to deal with other issues that they should not have to. The LGBTQ community is being discriminated against amongst other things. They continue to face an onslaught of attacks from the federal administration in Washington, the Hunan Rights Campaigns 2019 State Equality Index (SEI) documents how states were instrumental in advancing equality through pro-LGBTQ legislation, policies, and proposals( Indianas LGBTQ, 2020). Advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ community is also needed due to there not being federal non-discrimination protections put in place to ensure equality, in every state.
