Guidelines for Video/Research/Interview essay:
1. View the video of your choice from the list below and summarize the key points of the video (or pairs of videos). What is the significance of the information provided by the speaker? You may choose any video you want, but please don’t choose a video (or pair of videos) that you’ve already written about. Click on the following link for how to cite a TED Talk in APA style.
Citing a TED Talk in APA style. (Links to an external site.)
2. Find a research source that relates to the video. For instance, if you watch Steve Jobs’ Stanford commencement address of 2005, you might find a research source that addresses key points that influence changes, shifts, and insights that occur during key times in life. Use APA style to cite your source.
3. Interview a person that relates to the topic you’ve seen on video and researched. You can interview a family member or friend or anyone you have access to by telephone (or Zoom, Skype, or Facetime) who is willing to talk to you. I encourage you to write out questions in advance that you want to ask your subject, to listen carefully, to your subject, and to ask follow up questions. Take detailed notes. For instance, if you viewed the Steve Jobs commencement address, you might probe your interviewee for key moments in their life that led to important changes. A personal interview does not require a formal citation in APA style.
4. You should have an introduction, a conclusion, and a thesis statement and seek to have a unified essay–one that stays focused as you discuss all three of your sources. Your paper should be about 3-5 pages. Note that all papers are checked by Turnitin.com for plagiarism. The “Upload Submissions” button will be at the bottom of the page. After you submit your paper, click on “Submission details.” If your rating is more than 15%, you may need to revise and resubmit your essay. But if your score is high because Turnitin.com is flagging quotations that you have properly cited and attributed, don’t worry about that.
