Earlier this week, I assigned a reading: Ourika by Claire de Duras. In Claire de Duras Ourika, the protagonist, a black woman, internally conflicts with racial identity and in turn forms a false consciousness that prevents her normal functionality in a world that is not tailored to the negative racial connotations attached to her existence. Henceforth, Ourika slumps into a fatal depression as she learns her fate of never fully being able to transcend the class structure and efficiently enter society. Ourikas false consciousness is created by Madame de B., her guardian and savior from the oppressing conditions of slavery. In a two paragraph response to the following prompt:
