Film:

In addition, you should develop your creative content utilizing at least two other course readings or films (from previous weeks of the course). This requires you to use TWO course readings or full length films from previous weeks (music videos do not count for this requirement).

Required reading #1: Hill, Marc Lamont. “Scared Straight: Hip-Hop, Outing, and the Pedagogy of Queerness.” Review of Education, Pedagogy, and Cultural Studies 31, no. 1 (2009): 29–54

Required reading 1: Lane, Nikki. “Black Women Queering the Mic: Missy Elliott Disturbing the Boundaries of Racialized Sexuality and Gender.” Journal of Homosexuality 58, no. 6–7 (2011): 775–92.

Your original content should make it clear that you are addressing (finding a potential solution to) a global problem in Hip Hop relating to race, gender and sexuality. What is the problem you are addressing and what is your proposed solution?

It is not just writing an essay; rather you should be creating lyrics, spoken word, a video, audio, or illustrations… something ORIGINAL that you develop that is in response to your reading/media

Requirements

1. The digital media production should be at least 500 words (per person) or between 3-5 minutes long per student (if you use audio/video).

2.You should directly state which reading AND media you are referring to in your production.

3.You need to also incorporate reference to TWO other course readings/full length films from previous weeks.

4. ALSO, in your lyrics, video or audio, make sure that whenever you refer to the reading and media you make it clear you are doing so by putting it in bold print and using in-text citation or footnotes to make sure you convey where you are getting the info from and what exactly you are making reference to.

5. ALSO BE SURE TO EXPLAIN YOUR LYRICS AND HOW THEY RELATE TO BOTH THE READING AND THE MEDIA YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO FOCUS ON from the week in which it is due in addition to the TWO other course readings/films you have selected. This will help you get the grade you deserve so it is more clear where you are making those references.

Part 2: Outreach

The outreach should include at least 5 questions that are open-ended, encouraging your participants to respond in detail; the questions should be directly related to the course readings and films you are focusing on and that you used to create your d.m.p. (digital media production)

(1) You will also be required to reflect upon the interviews and how the responses relate to your d.m.p., the readings and films you focused on and what you have learned in this class, with in-depth reference and analysis of at least 3 course readings/films (these can be the same ones used to create the d.m.p).

This reflection should include specific quotes from your respondents and connect these quotes with specific aspects of the readings. You should then elaborate on the connections. Do not just briefly mention the readings without any elaboration. Additionally, the reflection should analyze how the respondents’ demographic backgrounds may have influenced their responses. For example, how did the gender, race and sexuality of each respondent impact how they answered your questions?

This reflection should be at least 500 words (per student) and should include a works cited with proper citation format (Chicago Manual of Style). Music videos do not count toward the “3 course readings/films” requirement. These three readings should be three academic readings from our course or a combination of full length films from our course and academic readings from our course. You are encouraged to utilize readings from previous weeks that you covered in your past assignments.
