Nursing shortages are a major problem in the USA and other countries. The main reason for these shortages is because of the increased demand for nurses. To address this shortage, many resources are spent on recruiting foreign nurses (Mar? et al., 2019). In addition, many countries do not allow nurses to work in other countries so nurse migration is an extremely important factor in addressing nursing shortages.
The need to recruit foreign nurses would decrease if the United States and other industrial nations put resources into increasing nurse retention. In case of a shortage of nurses, countries will try to recruit better trained nurses from abroad to fill vacancies. This will help reduce the cost of healthcare when compared to staffing through immigration channels. However, it is important for native born Nurses (NNHs) who have been trained in the country’s nursing schools not to be restricted by foreign policies such as visa restrictions or immigration quotas; they should be allowed to practice what they have learned while serving their home country (Bludau, 2021). It would also be necessary to provide adequate resources so that newly qualified nurses could continue their respective studies and gain experience working in different areas of nursing.
I chose clean water and sanitation as the SDG goal. Clean water and sanitation are human rights, everyone should have access to them. Community nurses can work toward achieving clean water and sanitation by helping communities develop or strengthen their own source of income to create sustainable solutions at home that meet their needs, including healthy nutrition and adequate screening for preventable diseases (Rosa et al., 2019). They can learn about their area and about the problems in their community, in addition to helping them set up a team to implement solutions. Communicating with residents and connecting them with local resources can make all the difference in achieving this goal.
