Globally, there are many people who are affected by a variety of social determinants, such as economic and political structures, social and physical environments, and access to health care (Healthypeople.gov, n.d.). Social determinants include five main categories: economic stability, educational opportunities, access and quality to health care, neighborhood contexts, and social/community contexts, which all contribute significantly to health, wellbeing, and quality of life for people (Healthypeople.gov, n.d.). Health disparities and inequalities are often attributed to social determinants of health. Neighborhood and community conditions are one of the underlying factors contributing to the health disparities faced by low income and ethnic minority groups. Racism and discrimination can also be discussed in this context (Palmer et al., 2019).

One’s neighborhood can have a significant impact on their health and well-being. In communities with high crime rates, polluted air, contaminated water, unhealthy fast food restaurants and limited access to healthcare, these people are at a disadvantage. As a result, they are at greater risk of contracting diseases and illnesses (Nejad et al., 2021). According to studies, the health status of people living in low income neighborhoods is significantly worse than that of people living in adjacent urban areas. As previously stated, ethnic minorities represent a large portion of the population in these communities and are also disproportionately affected by diseases (Nejad et al., 2021). This implies that in order to improve the health of these individuals, it is necessary to identify determinants that have a significant impact on health, and to concentrate on these determinants in order to improve their health.

Using health policy and advocacy is one way master’s prepared nurses can make a difference. Advocacy provides nurses with the opportunity to change health policies, including those that limit access to health care. Collaborating with state legislatures, for instance, to pass laws like the Full Practice Authority (FPA), will enable providers to expand access to individuals in low-income areas. The high risk areas of the country require a wide range of health services, educational programs, and health promotion initiatives.
