“In 2019, almost 2,400 teens in the United States aged 13–19 were killed and about 258,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes.” (CDC, 2021) Educating on car safety is very important in the teenage age group but also the pre-teen group. Educating on seatbelt use early can help to prevent future problems from not wearing a seatbelt. It is important to educate parents on safe use of restraints as well.

In a study published in the “Journal of Trauma Nursing”, it was found that restraint use among pediatric patients was low. “A total of 685 pediatric patients in MVCs were admitted to our PTC during the study period. Only 39 of 685 (5.7%) pediatric patients were in restraints.” (Elkbuli, A. et al. 2020) This is very concerning. If we do not start out at a young age educating and implementing restraint use, a child may never learn the importance of it or use it when they should be.  In order to promote this, we need to make sure that we are educating whenever we see the patient and ensuring that they use proper restraints. We need to emphasize the use and why it is important.

In a study published in BMC public heath, they looked at 11 studies that were all carried out in developed countries. It concluded that “Overall, the risk of any major injury was significantly lower in belted passengers compared to unbelted passengers”. It is important for us to stress the use of restraints from early childhood to young adult as it can save their lives.
