We will discuss leadership in week 14. Leaders have profound impacts on team performance. As we learned, leaders are different from managers, and leaders may not necessarily have an official managerial title or position. The recent leadership theories, such as shared leadership, suggested that every team member can be a leader (Muchinsky & Howes, 2019). I believe that all of you had played a leadership role to some degree when you worked with your semester-long project team members.
Reflect on your leadership behaviors and read chapter 13 (Leadership). Then answer the following questions in essay format:
- According to full-range leadership theory, there are five types of transformational leadership behaviors, including attributed charisma, idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. When you tried to motivate or influence your teammates, which types of behaviors did you conduct? Provide specific examples of your leadership behaviors.
- According to the authentic leadership theory, leaders must be aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Also, leaders need to be aware of how others see themselves. What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses as a leader?
- According to the servant leadership theory, leaders should put team members interests ahead of their interests. How do you evaluate your leadership behavior in terms of servant leadership? What did you learn from the semester-long team project in terms of being a better leader?
