Demonstrate your knowledge regarding two extreme approaches to criminology by choosing either the Classical or the Positivistic approach to criminal behavior.
Focus upon only one approach and articulate why that particular school of thought may be applied to criminal acts as well as the sentencing.
Note: I realize most of us are somewhere in between the two extremes. The point is to get you to commit to one side to better understand the complexities associated with such a complicated dilemma.
Remember:
1. Classical School of Criminology: People have free will and choose whether or not to engage in criminal activity; a cost benefit analysis in which the person weighs the pros of committing a crime against the cons of getting caught.
2. Positivistic School of Criminology: Individual behavior is beyond the control of each person; outside forces determine whether or not a person will engage in criminal activity. Criminal behavior can be based upon biological, psychological, or social factors.
