Scripture has instructions on counseling with wisdom. Proverbs gives us several characteristics of an effective counselor. Look at the following characteristics and ask God to show you the areas in which you need to grow. Reflect on your thoughts in this week’s Devotional.

Purity of life
“The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like complete darkness. Those who follow it have no idea what they are stumbling over.” (Prov. 4: 18-19)

Timing and tact
“Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many counselors bring success. Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time! …The godly think before speaking; the wicked spout evil words.” (Prov. 15:22-23, 28)

Good listener
“What a shame, what folly, to give advice before listening to the facts! … Intelligent people are always open to new ideas. In fact, they look for them.” (Prov.18:13,15)
Objective and discerning
“Any story sounds true until someone sets the record straight.” (Prov. 18:17)

Understanding
“Though good advice lies deep within a person’s heart, the wise will draw it out.” (Prov. 20:5)

Honesty
“A judge who says to the wicked, “You are innocent,” will be cursed by many people and denounced by the nations. But blessings are showered on those who convict the guilty. It is an honor to receive an honest reply.” (Prov. 24:24-26)

Genuine interest and love
“The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” (Prov. 27:9)
