Intro to discussion question: As we come to the close of our journey of reading (and this does not mean “closure”!), have you been able to identify any thematic concerns, any issues or topics that seem to be explored throughout the different narrative sections? If so, then what are these? We have already discussed the basic premiss of Mahfouz’s Arabian Nights and Days, and its relationship with the earlier Arabian Nights (also known as The Thousand and One Nights), but what is this second narrative, written in the 1990s, really about? What is the significance and meaning of all these stories, and all these characters? Do you find that there is a concern some sort of thematic concern — that seems to link, or weave through all these narrative sections, stories, and characters?
THE DISCUSSION QUESTION:
JUSTICE and INJUSTICE. How important is justice and injustice throughout Mahfouz’s narrative? Which sections, which stories and which characters are dealing with matters relating to justice and injustice? How important is this for Mahfouz’s narrative as a whole?
Read Naguib Mahfouz’s ARABIAN NIGHTS and DAYS (157-178, 194-228) and use the Introductory notes attached below.
