You all know of Edgar Allen Poe, one of American’s greatest story tellers. Poe is credited as the inventor of the genre of detective fiction in the 1840’s when he first published his series of 3 short stories starring August Dupin. Poe was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed the voluminous pseudo-autobiographical work of Frenchman Eugene François Vidocq. Vidocq, as you know, is regarded as the first private detective, and really the first professional detective since he organized the French police force’s detective branch. As a former criminal during the later years of the French Revolution, Vidocq was able to capture criminals because he knew their mindset and their habits, as we saw in the excerpt of his Memoirs.
Poe, in hommage to the great French detective, sets his stories in Paris. He borrows from a style of true crime stories popular in England, most notably from the Newgate Calendar. He responds to the anxiety of urban dwellers, who are freaking out at the growing crime rate by finding a way to solve those mysterious crimes that vex the police. He shifts emphasis from the crime committed to solving the crime, introducing the element of mystery into his stories.
