Watch the 2014 film Osun-Osogbo (Part of the PBS series Sacred Journeys hosted by Bruce Feiler) which focuses on the pilgrimage of African and African American believers to the sacred grove and river of the Yoruba goddess Osun (also spelled Oshun). Write a 1800 word (6-page) response paper in which you analyze the significance of the journey, the sacred site, the goddess, and her festival. Pay particularly attention to the perspectives and experiences of two African American women Oni Yebiye Hinton and Alafia Stewart who are traveling to Osogbo in order to become initiated as Osun priestesses. Furthermore, examine the ways in which Osun’s gender and the variation of the creation myth that’s shared in the documentary illuminates the role of women in Yoruba society. In your paper be sure to demonstrate your knowledge of Yoruba cosmology, practices, and principles as well as the interaction between Yoruba land and the New World. Make direct use of the readings we have done in the course so far particularly Harold Courlander and Robert Farris Thompson. You can refer to this entry from Encyclopedia Britannica for more information on Osun. You can also refer to the UNESCO website for more information on the sacred grove. You do not need to conduct any additional new research, however you can refer to the edited volume Osun Across the Waters: A Yoruba Goddess in Africa and the Americas which contains a series of wonderful essays by various scholars writing about the goddess (an electronic copy is available from the NYU Library).
