 Of course, job satisfaction is important for other reasons as well – reasons that have nothing to do with job performance or organizational commitment.  For example, job satisfaction is closely related to life satisfaction, or the degree to which employees feel happy in their lives.  Research shows that job satisfaction is one of the strongest predictors of life satisfaction.  Simply put, people feel better about their lives when they feel better about their jobs.  This link makes sense when you realize how much of our identity has been encapsulated in our functions.  What is the first question people ask each other after they are introduced?  That’s right – “What are you doing?”  If you feel bad about your answer to this question, it’s hard to be satisfied with your life.  The relationship between job satisfaction and life satisfaction also makes sense given how much of our lives we spend at work.  It presents the results of one study that examines the time spent on daily activities, along with reported levels of positive and negative emotions as those activities go along.  Study participants spent most of their day working.  Unfortunately, that time resulted in the highest levels of negative emotions and the second lowest levels of positive emotions (after navigation only).  Domestic and leisure activities (eg, socializing, relaxation, exercise, intimate relationships) were considered more satisfying but took up a much smaller part of the day.  The implication is clear: if we want to feel better in our days, we need to find a way to be more satisfied with our jobs.

 In fact, increases in job satisfaction have a stronger effect on life satisfaction than increases in salary or income.  It turns out that the old saying “money can’t buy happiness” is partially true.
