1) Explain the distinction between “temporal” and “spiritual”? Give an example of a person from each category. How does Luther view the different roles (cobbler, priest, peasant) in society compared to the role of a priest? Are they on the same level in all respects?
2) In attacking the idea that “the temporal power has no jurisdiction over the spiritual,” Luther attempts to bring down the Catholic Church from its high pedestal (pg. 3). How does he argue for this? Explain his reasoning for why the Church should not be exempt from temporal power. Do you agree with his argument? Why or why not?
3) In the section called “The Second Wall,” Luther proposes the controversial thought that scripture should not only be interpreted by the Catholic Church. What is Luther’s argument for denying the Church’s authority on scriptural interpretation? Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
4) Are there any institutions TODAY in our time that have authority with respect to some domain of knowledge? Why should we or shouldn’t we reduce their level of authority?
