Discussion Highlights:

Chattel slavery in USA, as we will examine in this course, was an economic system that had a component of ownership of human beings as personal property (commodities). This system also treated these slaves as of an inferior race.

A slave being of an inferior race is not a requirement in all systems of slavery.

Slavery, being dynamic, exists today in many forms. Also, there are a lot of economic models today that are equivalent to systems of slavery even if they do not own the workers as personal property. Some of these economic systems continue to “own” the workers in other ways.

Discussion:

From how you now understand slavery, discuss the many forms of slavery (worldwide) today and how, even though the workers may not be “owned” by the employers, there is very little “humanity” when it comes to the treatment of these workers. Specific examples would help your discussion.
